Protecting homes, forests, and the greater Angel Fire community.
The Angel Fire Community Protection Project is led by the Cimarron Watershed Alliance and funded through a Community Wildfire Defense Grant from the USDA Forest Service.

Approximately 2,822 acres of high-priority private land in and around Angel Fire are planned for fuels reduction and forest restoration work. Most project work will occur within Village of Angel Fire limits, with some priority work extending into nearby unincorporated portions of Colfax County.

The goal is to reduce hazardous fuels, improve forest health, help protect homes and community infrastructure, and create a landscape better able to withstand wildfire.
Angel Fire is in an area identified as having very high wildfire risk.
CWA has expanded forest and watershed restoration work throughout the Enchanted Circle in response to the region's wildfire risk and the broader Wildfire Crisis.
Four primary types
of treatment.
Specific treatment methods will depend on the location and conditions of each treatment area. Work may be completed with forestry equipment, smaller equipment, or hand crews.
Defensible Space
Reducing hazardous vegetation and fuels around homes and structures to improve wildfire resilience.
Forest Thinning
Reducing excess trees and vegetation to improve forest conditions and lessen potential wildfire intensity.
Fuel Breaks
Strategically reducing vegetation in key locations to help slow wildfire spread and support community protection.
Pile Burning
Disposing of accumulated woody material through controlled pile burning when conditions and regulations allow.

Focused where work can make the biggest difference.
Treatment areas have been identified and prioritized to support community protection and landscape resilience. Priority is based in part on fuel loading and the prevailing southwest winds during fire season.

The project is also designed to complement completed, planned, and proposed fuels reduction and forest restoration treatments on surrounding lands.

Could your property be part of the project?
The project is focused on properties that:
-
Are located in or around the Angel Fire project area. Most planned work is within Village limits, with some priority treatment just beyond those limits in unincorporated Colfax County.
-
Align with project treatment priorities. Treatment areas are strategically prioritized to reduce overall wildfire risk and support larger landscape-scale work.
Submitting interest does not guarantee treatment.
CWA will need to confirm whether a property falls within current project boundaries and priorities and whether proposed work fits available funding and project requirements.
Not sure where your property falls?
Use the map above or contact CWA before completing the survey.
Interested in participating?
If your property is in or near the Angel Fire project area, complete the landowner interest survey. The information will help CWA understand your property and determine whether it may fit current project priorities.
